Scene of the Fire at Cottenham - sketched from Lambs Corner, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Scene of the Fire at Cottenham - sketched from Lambs Corner, [Cambridgeshire], 1850. The inflammable nature of the materials in the yard soon caused the fire to spread with the most fearful rapidity; and in a short space of time the whole of the premises, the fire being assisted in its devouring progress by the wind, were in a complete mass of flame...All human exertions were at once seen to be useless, and the owners were obliged passively to look on and behold the destruction of their property. The flames spread from farm to farm, all of them being reduced to ashes...The loss is enormous. The vile act of the incendiary [arsonist] has in this instance caused the most heartrending misery. Numbers of persons are not only thrown out of employ, but are dependent upon charity for food and shelter, whilst the miscreant who has caused the calamity remains undiscovered'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative sketch captures the devastating aftermath of a fire that ravaged the village of Cottenham in Cambridgeshire, England, in 1850. The scene, sketched from Lambs' Corner, depicts the charred remains of several buildings, their once solid structures now reduced to smoldering ruins. The flames, fueled by the inflammable materials in the yard, had spread with alarming speed, consuming farm after farm in a terrifyingly short time. The wind, far from being a helpful ally, only served to fan the flames, making containment an impossible task for the desperate residents. As they watched their properties go up in flames, the owners could only stand by and helplessly witness the destruction of their livelihoods. The fire soon became an inferno that engulfed the entire community, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The loss was enormous, with many families left destitute and without means of support. The once bustling village was now a scene of despair, with its inhabitants left to rely on the kindness of their neighbors and the generosity of the community for food and shelter. The identity of the arsonist, the person responsible for this vile act, remained a mystery. The devastating impact of the fire on the community was palpable, with many left jobless and struggling to rebuild their lives. The scene depicted in this sketch serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of fire and the devastating consequences of arson.
