Scene from the opera of "The Night Dancers", at the Royal English Opera, Covent Garden, 1860. London stage production. The accompanying Illustration represents the most striking situation in this opera - the scene which forms the conclusion of the first act. The villagers are assembled to celebrate the nuptials of the rustic heroine, Giselle, with her lover Albert. The dance is broken off by the entrance of the Duke of Silesia and his daughter Bertha, followed by huntsmen and attendants; and the Duke discovers that Albert, the seeming peasant, js his nephew, who is betrothed to his daughter. Giselle is struck with horror by this fatal disclosure, and her noble rival, pitying her distress, generously renounces her claim to Albert's hand. But it is too late. The blow has been fatal, and Giselle falls lifeless into some of the female villagers arms, while the persons present are grouped around in attitudes of astonishment and sorrow. The abbey bell begins to toll, the abbot and monks enter in procession, and, at the end of a solemn requiem, the curtain falls'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image hails from the 1860 production of the opera "The Night Dancers" at the Royal English Opera, Covent Garden. The scene depicted in this photograph marks the climax of the first act. The villagers have gathered to celebrate the marriage of the rustic heroine, Giselle, to her beloved Albert. However, the joyous occasion is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of the Duke of Silesia and his daughter Bertha, accompanied by huntsmen and attendants. The Duke is shocked to discover that Albert, who has been presenting himself as a humble peasant, is in fact his nephew, betrothed to Bertha. Giselle, upon learning this devastating truth, collapses in horror. Bertha, moved by Giselle's distress, selflessly renounces her claim to Albert's hand. But it is too late. Giselle's heart, unable to bear the revelation, gives out, and she falls lifeless into the arms of some of the female villagers. The scene is one of shock and sorrow, with onlookers gathered around in disbelief. The tolling of the abbey bell heralds the entrance of the abbot and monks, who perform a solemn requiem. The curtain then falls, bringing an end to this tragic turn of events. This photograph, taken from the pages of the "Illustrated London News" in 1860, offers a glimpse into the dramatic and emotional intensity of this opera production. The image captures the poignant moment of loss and the profound impact of the revelation on the characters, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
