EDITORS COMMENTS
Scene One from the Play Chushingura: Kono Moronao and Kaoyo, c1850, is a captivating woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada. This masterpiece, created during the 1850s, depicts a pivotal moment from the classic Japanese drama, "Kanadehon Chushingura," or "The Treasury of Loyal Retainers." The print showcases two central characters, Kono Moronao (played by Ichikawa Danjūrō V) and Kaoyo Gozen (played by Onoe Kochō V), from the famous story of the Loyal League of Forty-Seven Ronin. Moronao, a masterless samurai, is seen in deep conversation with Kaoyo, the wife of his late lord, Asano Naganori. Kaoyo, dressed in a stunning kimono adorned with intricate patterns, is shown wearing a traditional headdress known as a goteotei. The print's rich colors, primarily black and other dark tones, evoke a sense of mystery and intrigue. Moronao's somber expression and Kaoyo's determined gaze add depth to the scene, as they plot their revenge against the corrupt lord who caused their lord's downfall. The print's background, featuring a serene landscape, provides a striking contrast to the intense emotions and plotting taking place in the foreground. This woodblock print, a beautiful example of the Edo period's art and fashion, is a testament to the enduring legacy of Japanese theater and the captivating stories it has brought to life. The print is now part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire and intrigue visitors from around the world.
