Schubert fled from the room, (1907). Creator: Unknown

Schubert fled from the room, (1907). In 1822, the young Schubert meets the celebrated composer Beethoven:a courteous but somewhat formal welcome was accorded them. This in itself was bad enough for poor Schubert, whose courage straightway forsook him; but when Beethoven proceeded to hand to him the bundle of paper and the carpenters pencil which, owing to his deafness, he kept in readiness for his visitors, Schuberts shyness prevented him writing a single word...Beethoven, looking through the composition, lighted upon something to which he took exception, and forthwith proceeded to point it out to his visitor. This was the last straw, and Schubert, losing his presence of mind altogether, fled from the room. An episode from the life of Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828). From " Story-Lives of Great Musicians", by F.J. Rowbotham. [Wells Gardner, Darton & Co. Ltd, London, 1907]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Schubert fled from the room" captures a poignant moment in the life of Austrian composer Franz Schubert. Taken in 1907, this image transports us back to 1822 when a young Schubert had the opportunity to meet his idol, Ludwig van Beethoven. The photograph depicts an intimate scene where Beethoven presents Schubert with a bundle of paper and a carpenter's pencil, ready for their musical collaboration. However, overwhelmed by shyness and intimidated by Beethoven's presence, Schubert finds himself unable to write even a single word. To make matters worse, as Beethoven peruses through the composition, he discovers something that doesn't meet his standards and proceeds to point it out to his visitor. This proves too much for poor Schubert who loses all composure and hastily flees from the room in embarrassment. This snapshot beautifully encapsulates the vulnerability and human side of these legendary composers. It reminds us that even great artists like Schubert can experience moments of self-doubt and insecurity when faced with their idols. Preserved within this century-old print is not only an artistic encounter but also a glimpse into the complex emotions that fuel creativity. It serves as a testament to both Schubert's admiration for Beethoven and his own struggles as an aspiring musician. Through this enigmatic photograph captured by an unknown creator, we are transported into history itself - witnessing firsthand how profound encounters between musical giants can shape artistic legacies.
