The Screw Steam-Ship "Prince", wrecked off Balaclava Harbour, 1854. Creator: Unknown. The Screw Steam-Ship "Prince", wrecked off Balaclava Harbour, 1854. Creator: Unknown

The Screw Steam-Ship "Prince", wrecked off Balaclava Harbour, 1854. Crimean War: severe storm wrecks up to 30 vessels including Royal Navy warships....the wind blowing a terrific hurricane from the southward and westward...Captain Goodall, who had been on deck from the commencement of the gale, called all hands aft, and, with Captain Baynton, R.N. Transport Agent, pulled off their coats, Captain Goodall, at the same time, saying, "Now, my lads. I've done the best I can for you; every man must try and save himself"...About 9.16 a.m. the ship touched the rocks, and, owing to the great force of wind and severe sea setting in at that time, in fifteen minutes after not a vestige of her was to be seen...I did not see Captain Baynton or Captain Goodall after the ship struck. Every person seemed very cool and collected under such awful circumstances'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Screw Steam-Ship 'Prince': A Tragic Tale of the Crimean War's Unforgiving Seas This haunting image captures the remnants of the wrecked steamship 'Prince,' which met its fate off the shores of Balaclava Harbour in 1854. The cause of its demise was a severe storm that ravaged the Black Sea during the Crimean War. The tempest, described as a 'terrific hurricane,' wreaked havoc on up to 30 vessels, including several Royal Navy warships. The 'Prince's' final moments were recorded in the 'Illustrated London News.' According to an account, Captain Goodall, the ship's commander, and Captain Baynton, the transport agent, remained on deck from the onset of the gale. Braving the elements, they encouraged their crew to prepare for the worst. As the storm's intensity increased, Captain Goodall reportedly urged his men, 'Now, my lads. I've done the best I can for you; every man must try and save himself.' At approximately 9:16 a.m., the 'Prince' struck the rocks. The storm's relentless force and the sea's severe conditions resulted in the ship's complete disintegration within fifteen minutes. Tragically, neither Captain Baynton nor Captain Goodall were seen or heard from after the ship's collision with the shore. The crew, however, displayed remarkable composure and resilience under the most dire of circumstances. Their calm demeanor in the face of such devastation is a testament to their courage and determination to survive.
