The Sheep of His Pasture, 1828. Creator: Edward Calvert (British, 1799-1883)
The Sheep of His Pasture, 1828. Calvert was so influenced by William Blakes wood engravings that The Sheep of his Pasture is directly based on an illustration for The Pastorals of Virgil (on view nearby). Calvert, however, even more than Blake, exploited the ability of wood engraving to achieve the most delicate detail, so astonishing in these miniatures. Calverts subject matter originated from a vision of the golden age of pastoral innocence and abundance that has both Christian and classical overtones. The women in The Brook resemble figures carved on antique gems, and the tree stumps symbolize the transitory nature of life

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Edward Calvert is a captivating wood engraving that showcases the artist's remarkable attention to detail. Inspired by William Blake's work, Calvert takes his artistry even further by exploiting the medium to achieve delicate intricacies in this miniature masterpiece. Calvert draws from both Christian and classical influences to depict a vision of the golden age of pastoral innocence and abundance. The women depicted in "The Brook" resemble figures carved on ancient gems, exuding an ethereal beauty. Symbolically, the tree stumps scattered throughout the scene represent the transitory nature of life itself. This print transports viewers back to a simpler time, evoking feelings of tranquility and nostalgia for an idyllic past. The sheep grazing peacefully in their lush pasture serve as a reminder of harmony between man and nature. Edward Calvert's skillful execution elevates this wood engraving into a work of art that captures both imagination and emotion. Each intricate line etched into the wood tells its own story, inviting viewers to explore every corner with awe and wonder. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print stands as a testament to Calvert's mastery over his craft during the 19th century British art scene. It serves as an enduring reminder that true beauty lies within even the smallest details when observed through an artist's discerning eye.
