Ski Shoes For Use with Finnesko, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Ski Shoes For Use with Finnesko, (Devised by Lt. Gran and made by P.O. Evans), c1910– 1913, (1913). Finnesko - boots of tanned reindeer skin with the hair on the outside. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pair of ski shoes designed for use with Finnesko, dating back to the early 20th century. Created by artist Herbert Ponting, this image is part of the collection titled "Scott's Last Expedition" which documents the ill-fated journey of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team. The Terra Nova Expedition, as it was officially known, set out in June 1910 with the ambitious goal of reaching the South Pole. Equipped with a diverse group of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, and more, Scott aimed to continue his scientific research while also achieving this historic feat. However, upon their arrival at the South Pole on January 17th, 1912, they were met with disappointment as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there just a month earlier. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished in late March. Their bodies and diaries were eventually found eight months later. This haunting photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their courageous but ultimately unsuccessful expedition. The ski shoes depicted here are specifically designed for use with Finnesko - boots made from tanned reindeer skin with hair on the outside - showcasing both innovation and adaptability in extreme conditions. Preserved through time within "Scott's Last Expedition" this image offers us a glimpse into an extraordinary chapter in exploration history that continues to captivate our imagination today.
