South Fang, Old Crater, c1912, (1913). Artist: Raymond E Priestley
South Fang, Old Crater, c1912, (1913). Mount Erebus, Lower Fang. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "South Fang, Old Crater, c1912" by Raymond E Priestley takes us back to the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott in 1912. The Terra Nova Expedition was a remarkable journey that aimed to explore the uncharted lands of Antarctica and conduct scientific research. Led by Scott, this diverse team consisted of experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Their mission was not only to reach the South Pole but also to continue the valuable scientific work initiated during Scott's previous expedition. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring countless challenges and harsh weather conditions along their treacherous path towards the Pole; Scott and his companions - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans- finally arrived at their destination. However, the joy of reaching their goal quickly turned into disappointment when they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically, supplies dwindling and ravaged by blizzards, the team faced an insurmountable struggle for survival. By March's end, the remaining members succumbed to exhaustion and extreme coldness. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found alongside poignant diaries recounting their heroic efforts. This photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II, a collection published in London in 1913 by Smith, Elder & Co. , which immortalizes both the triumphs and tragedies experienced during this fateful Antarctic exploration.
