The South Middlesex Volunteers, 1862. Creator: W Thomas
The South Middlesex Volunteers, 1862. Sergeant Thompson, Enseign [Tonks?], Capt. Murdoch, Capt. and Adjt. Spence Turner, Capt. Bromley, Lord Ranelagh, Major Atherley, Lieut. Clayton, Sergeant Lock, Ensign Gilley, Hon. Mr. Vereker, Capt. Hawker, Lieut. Gaskoin. This noted corps was, as its title, the 2nd Middlesex, implies, one of the earliest formed. Its efficiency and popularity are in a great measure owing to the energetic management, tempered by judgment, of its Colonel, Viscount Ranelagh. The present number of the corps is about fifteen hundred, and it is daily increasing in strength...Most of the officers of this regiment are military men, many of them having seen much service in India and the Crimea'. Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Heron Jones, 7th Viscount Ranelagh KCB (1812-1885) was an enthusiastic supporter of the movement to recruit amateur soldiers for the defence of Britain. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled 'The South Middlesex Volunteers, 1862' by W Thomas, captures a group of distinguished military officers of the 2nd Middlesex Regiment. The image features a lineup of 14 officers, including Sergeant Thompson, Ensign Tonks, Captains Murdoch, Spence Turner, Bromley, Ranelagh, Atherley, Clayton, Lock, Gilley, Vereker, Hawker, and Gaskoin. The South Middlesex Volunteers, as the title suggests, was one of the earliest formed corps in Britain, and its popularity and efficiency were largely due to the effective leadership of its Colonel, Viscount Ranelagh. The regiment, with an approximate strength of fifteen hundred members, was composed mainly of military men who had seen extensive service in India and the Crimea. The photograph showcases the officers in their full military regalia, standing proudly in a formal lineup. The Colonel, 7th Viscount Ranelagh, KCB, is depicted in the center, dressed in his military uniform, exuding an air of authority and confidence. The image is a testament to the spirit of civil defence and the growing trend of volunteerism in 19th century Britain. Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Heron Jones, 7th Viscount Ranelagh, was a passionate advocate for the recruitment of amateur soldiers for the defence of the country. His leadership and management skills were instrumental in the formation and success of the South Middlesex Volunteers. The regiment's popularity continued to grow, and this photograph serves as a reminder of the dedication and commitment of its officers during a time of increasing social and political change.
