Spray Ridges of Ice After A Blizzard, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Spray Ridges of Ice After A Blizzard" captures the haunting beauty and treacherous conditions faced by Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team during their ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image transports us back to a time when brave explorers ventured into the unforgiving landscapes of Antarctica in pursuit of scientific discovery and personal triumph. The photograph showcases the aftermath of a blizzard, with jagged ridges of ice glistening under a pale blue sky. The frozen landscape stretches as far as the eye can see, evoking a sense of isolation and vulnerability. Each ridge is meticulously carved by nature's forces, resembling delicate waves frozen in time. Scott's final expedition was marked by both determination and tragedy. Despite being beaten to the South Pole by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian team, Scott's unwavering spirit pushed him forward until he met his ultimate demise along with his companions. Their bodies were discovered months later, along with poignant diaries that revealed their courage in the face of unimaginable hardship. This print serves as a powerful reminder not only of Scott's heroic journey but also of humanity's relentless quest for knowledge and exploration. It stands as an enduring testament to those who risked everything for science, adventure, and pushing the boundaries of human achievement in one of Earth’s most inhospitable environments.
