Steam-ships of the Allied Fleet searching for Infernal Machines off Cronstadt... 1854. Creator: Unknown
Steam-ships of the Allied Fleet searching for Infernal Machines off Cronstadt - from a sketch by W.O. Brierly, 1854. Crimean War: Royal Navy ships at a Russian port city....the Driver and Bulldog steamers...proceeded in the direction of the batteries, and lowered boats, which made an examination, and secured a line to a piece of timber apparently having a plug driven into it: this was then hauled up to the Driver, and hoisted out of the water to her bow: this proved to be a spar, about ten feet in length, with a large stone attached to it by a chain. After some further examination by the boats, the two vessels steamed out with a hawser made fast between them, to sweep the passage. In a short time another was met with, which resisted any attempt to move it in this way; and, it being now late in the evening, the hawser was hauled on board, and the vessels returned to anchor'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the intensity and intrigue of the Crimean War, as depicted in a sketch by W.O. Brierly titled 'Steam-ships of the Allied Fleet searching for Infernal Machines off Cronstadt,' published in the Illustrated London News in 1854. The scene unfolds at the Russian port city of Cronstadt, where the Driver and Bulldog steamers, emblematic of the advanced naval technology of the era, diligently search for elusive 'Infernal Machines.' The Infernal Machines, a fearsome invention of the Russian forces, were reportedly hidden beneath the waters, posing a significant threat to the Allied Fleet. The steamers, armed with determination and innovation, proceeded towards the batteries, lowering boats to conduct a thorough examination. One such examination led to the discovery of a spar, approximately ten feet long, with a large stone attached to it by a chain. Upon further inspection, the vessels attempted to move the obstacle by securing a hawser between them. However, their efforts were met with resistance. With the evening drawing near, the hawser was hauled on board, and the vessels returned to anchor. The search continued, as the stakes were high, and the safety of the Allied Fleet hung in the balance. This evocative image encapsulates the suspense and strategic maneuvers of the Crimean War, providing a glimpse into the past and the remarkable role steamships played in the military landscape of the mid-19th century.
