Stores of Fish on the Shore - Fishing on Lake Zaisan, 1909
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photograph by Russian artist Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev, showcasing the bustling scene of a Cossack fishing community on the shores of Lake Zaisan in western Siberia. The image is part of a larger collection of photographs from the "Views of the territory of the Siberian Cossack Host" album, which was created for the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The photograph depicts a vibrant and productive scene of Cossack fishermen at work, with their nets full of fish spread out on the shore to be sorted and sold. The lake, located in present-day Kazakhstan, was a significant source of sustenance and livelihood for the Cossack communities in the region. The men in the photograph are seen working together, using traditional fishing methods to catch the abundant fish population in the lake. The photograph offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and Kazakhstan during the early 20th century. The album, which also includes images of Cossack settlements, agriculture, and industry, was compiled by Katanaev during a journey to these regions in 1909. The collection of photographs was assembled by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk between 1891 and 1918. This photograph is an important historical record of the Cossack communities in western Siberia and Kazakhstan, offering a unique perspective on their daily lives and the natural resources that sustained them. The image also highlights the importance of fishing as a vital economic activity in the region, which continues to be an essential industry for the local communities today.
