The Sultan at the Fancy-Dress Ball given by the Viscountess Stratford de Redcliffe, at the British E Creator: Unknown
The Sultan at the Fancy-Dress Ball given by the Viscountess Stratford de Redcliffe, at the British Embassy, at Pera, 1856. Party in Constantinople thrown by the wife of the British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire....the orchestra of the Italian Theatre...played the Turkish march and the French and English national airs whilst the Sultan proceeded slowly through the splendid saloons of the Embassy. Lord Stratford...received the Sultan...The ladies of the different Ambassadors and Ministers were then presented to his Highness. The Sultan looked on at the dancing with evident pleasure...Those who had pretty feet wore the picturesque costumes of Spanish, Swiss, and Italian shepherdesses. These dresses were mixed up with the gorgeous uniforms of the military and diplomatists, and every variety of romantic and grotesque attire, borrowed from history or the bal de l'opera'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

This photograph captures a memorable moment from the Fancy-Dress Ball given by the Viscountess Stratford de Redcliffe at the British Embassy in Constantinople in 1856. The Sultan, an esteemed guest of honor, gracefully makes his way through the embellished saloons of the embassy, surrounded by an eclectic mix of diplomats, military personnel, and their wives. The orchestra of the Italian Theatre plays a lively medley of Turkish marches and national airs from France and England, adding to the festive atmosphere. Lord Stratford de Redcliffe, the British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, warmly welcomes the Sultan, who gazes intently at the lively scene before him. The ladies in attendance, dressed in a vibrant array of costumes, include Spanish, Swiss, and Italian shepherdesses, military uniforms, and romantic and grotesque attire borrowed from history and the ballet. The Sultan's expression of delight is a testament to the enchanting and inclusive nature of this extraordinary event. This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1856, offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural exchange that took place between Europe and the Ottoman Empire during this period. The Sultan's presence at the Fancy-Dress Ball represents the diplomatic and social connections that were forged during this time, and serves as a reminder of the enduring allure of cross-cultural celebrations.
