Summer Time - The Ice Opening Up, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Summer Time - The Ice Opening Up, c1910– 1913, (1913). Penguins. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Summer Time - The Ice Opening Up" captures the essence of a momentous expedition that took place between 1910 and 1913. Created by renowned artist Herbert Ponting, this image showcases a pivotal chapter in British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final journey. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was an ambitious undertaking that aimed to further scientific research while striving to be the first team to reach the South Pole. Led by Scott, this diverse group included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. In this photograph from Scott's Last Expedition Volume I published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , we witness a breathtaking scene of penguins amidst ice opening up during summertime. It serves as a testament to both the beauty and challenges encountered during their arduous journey through treacherous terrains. Tragically though they reached their destination on January 17th, 1912 only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there. Plagued by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were discovered eight months later along with poignant diaries detailing their heroic efforts. This print not only commemorates an extraordinary adventure but also pays homage to those who sacrificed everything in pursuit of knowledge and exploration. It stands as a timeless reminder of human resilience against nature's formidable forces and our unyielding spirit for discovery.
