Supervisor of the Bukhtarma Fishing Unit Greeting the Chinese Amban, 18th century. Creator: Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin

Supervisor of the Bukhtarma Fishing Unit Greeting the Chinese Amban, 18th century. One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. The album was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918, reigned 1895-1917), Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops, a title bestowed by Nicholas I), and presented to him in the summer of 1891 on his return to Saint Petersburg through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. The theme of the album is Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman (or ataman) Ermak Timofeevich (died 1585) over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with subjects from more than three centuries of Russian history

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 18th century watercolor painting by Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin, titled "Supervisor of the Bukhtarma Fishing Unit Greeting the Chinese Amban," we witness an intriguing moment in the annals of Siberian history. The scene unfolds on the shores of the Bukhtarma River, where the supervisor, dressed in traditional Cossack attire, extends a warm welcome to the Chinese amban, or ambassador, under a canopy adorned with rich fabrics and intricate designs. The arrival of the Chinese diplomat marks a significant meeting of frontiers between Russia and China, reflecting the complex geopolitical landscape of the time. The supervisor, with a group of men, stands ready to receive their esteemed guest, as the sun casts a warm glow over the tranquil water and the sandy beach. The scene is populated with various elements that speak to the rich heritage of the region. Birds, possibly gulls, fly overhead, while fish are spread out on a drying rack to be preserved for later consumption. The Chinese amban, dressed in the robes of his office, brings with him the exotic allure of a far-off land. This painting is part of an album of 21 watercolors (originally 27) from the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. Created as a gift for Tsar Nicholas II in 1891, the album showcases the history of the Cossacks east of the Ural Mountains, tracing their roots back to the victory of Ermak Timofeevich over Khan Kuchum in 1582. This work of art offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Siberian history and the complex diplomatic relationships that shaped the region.
