Thames Tunnel, c1830

Thames Tunnel, c1830. The Thames Tunnel from Rotherhithe to Wapping was the most remarkable undertaking by the engineer and inventor Sir Marc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849). His son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) was site engineer on the project. Construction began in 1825, but was not completed until 1843, partly due to the workings being totally flooded in 1828, causing the project to be abandoned for several years. 50, 000 people walked through the tunnel on the day it opened. Today it is part of the London Underground

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Thames Tunnel, a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of engineer Sir Marc Isambard Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Constructed between 1825 and 1843, this remarkable feat of civil engineering connects Rotherhithe to Wapping beneath the River Thames. The image transports us back to the early 19th century, where horse-drawn vehicles traverse the archway above while sailing boats gracefully glide along the river's surface. The vibrant colors bring life to this historical moment, showcasing both the architectural beauty of the tunnel and its surrounding geography. It is fascinating to learn that this ambitious project faced numerous challenges, including a devastating flood in 1828 that halted construction for several years. However, despite these setbacks, over 50,000 people eagerly walked through its tunnels on opening day. Today, as part of London Underground's extensive network, this once groundbreaking achievement continues to serve as a vital transportation link for millions. It stands not only as an enduring symbol of Britain's industrial revolution but also as a testament to human innovation and determination. Through this evocative print from Heritage Images' collection by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Sir Marc Isambard Brunel themselves (with an unknown creator), we are reminded of their lasting legacy in shaping our modern world through their pioneering work in engineering and architecture.
