"The Outrage upon Sir John Coventry", by T.H. Maguire, in the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1860. Engraving after a painting. Sir John Coventry, who was created a K.B. at the coronation of Charles II. having indulged in a joke on the King's mistresses, the Duke of Monmouth and others laid a plot to avenge the King's dignity upon him, by a most brutal outrage...Sir Thomas Sandys, O'Brian, and thirteen others...at midnight on the 21st of December, 1670, attacked Sir John in Pall-Mall...Sir John...defended himself bravely for some time, wounding several of his assailants but was at length overpowered and held down while they cut his nose to the bone. In consequence of this barbarity an Act was immediately passed...to prevent malicious maiming and wounding, which is still known as Sir John Coventry's Act...The composition gives an admirable idea of a street row in those lawless times, when every man was arbiter in his own quarrel, and the sword gave the law in the public streets of the metropolis...The arrangement of the figures is skilfully contrived. The murderous scene is dimly lighted by means of a torch held by a man who sits on a wall. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

The Outrage upon Sir John Coventry,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating masterpiece by Thomas Hickey Maguire, was unveiled at the prestigious Royal Academy Exhibition in 1860. This engraving, created by W. Godwin, is an exquisite representation of the original painting that brought both shock and awe to the art world. The painting portrays a pivotal moment in English history, recounting the brutal attack on Sir John Coventry in Pall-Mall, London, in 1670. Sir John, who had dared to make light of the King's mistresses, found himself on the receiving end of a vengeful plot orchestrated by the Duke of Monmouth and his associates. The composition brilliantly captures the chaos and lawlessness of the era, where every man was his own judge and the sword held the power in the public streets. The scene is dimly lit by a torch held by a man perched on a wall, adding to the sense of danger and uncertainty. Sir John, having defended himself valiantly, is shown being overpowered and held down by his assailants. Wounded and disfigured, he would go on to inspire an Act of Parliament, known as Sir John Coventry's Act, to prevent malicious maiming and wounding. This engraving offers a vivid depiction of the event, transporting us back to a time when the streets of London were a far cry from the order and safety we know today. The skillful arrangement of the figures and the intricate details of the scene make for a captivating and thought-provoking piece of historical art.
