Tracks of S. Y. Terra Nova - January to March 1912, 1913

Tracks of S.Y. Terra Nova - January to March 1912, 1913. Map showing routes of the SY (Sailing Yacht or Steam Yacht) Terra Nova which took supplies to expedition members, and transported them between research bases. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate tracks of the S. Y. Terra Nova during its expedition from January to March 1912, in a map format. The Terra Nova, a sailing yacht or steam yacht, played a crucial role in supplying expedition members and facilitating transportation between research bases during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final Antarctic exploration. The British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, aimed to continue scientific work initiated by Scott during his previous Discovery Expedition (1901-04) while striving to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Alongside Scott were an array of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists and physicists. On 17th January 1912, after enduring arduous conditions alongside Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans; Scott reached their ultimate goal - only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already triumphed over them by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team perished at the end of March. Their bodies along with their poignant diaries were discovered eight months later. This evocative image is sourced from "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913. It serves as both a testament to human resilience in extreme environments and a reminder of the sacrifices made for scientific discovery.
