Tree of Liberty, on the Boulevard St. Martin, at Paris, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Tree of Liberty, on the Boulevard St. Martin, at Paris, 1850. During the past week riots of a revolutionary character have taken place in that capital; the ostensible cause of which was the removal of some of the decayed trees of liberty which disfigured the Boulevards...On the tree of liberty at the Porte St. Martin, the inscription of "Vive la Republique Nouvelle" had been placed. This tree was also decorated with fresh wreaths and ribbons; a small bust of Liberty was placed on the trunk; and under it, a placard, with an extract from the Code Penal. The mob formed a circle about the tree, dancing, and singing the Marseillaise; and lanterns and torches gleamed in every direction...Between two and three o'clock in the afternoon, the crowd became so thick and compact about the Porte St. Martin, that troops had to be ordered up to keep the streets clear...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the spirit of revolution in 19th century Paris, as depicted in an engraving from the Illustrated London News in 1850. The Tree of Liberty on the Boulevard St. Martin stands proudly amidst a sea of people, each holding flaming torches and waving French flags. The allegorical figure of Liberty, represented by a small bust at the base of the tree, gazes down upon the festivities with approval. The inscription 'Vive la Republique Nouvelle' (Long Live the New Republic) adorns the tree, reflecting the democratic sentiments of the crowd. The scene is set against the backdrop of civil unrest, with the removal of decayed trees serving as the ostensible cause of the riots. The mob gathers around the tree, celebrating with music and dance, their faces illuminated by lanterns and torches. The atmosphere is charged with energy and defiance, as the people of Paris assert their desire for change. The Tree of Liberty became a symbol of resistance and freedom, a beacon of hope for those seeking to overthrow the old regime. The image captures the spirit of rebellion and the power of the people to bring about change, making it a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of the French Revolution.
