EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Tunguz urusa (yurt)" by Russian photographer V.V. Lanin, dates back to the 1860s. The image offers a rare glimpse into the lives of the nomadic people of the Amur region during this time. The photograph depicts a group of boys and men gathered around a yurt, a traditional dwelling used by the Tungus and other nomadic peoples of Siberia. The yurt, with its distinctive conical shape and intricate decorative patterns, is surrounded by a herd of moose, or cervus alces, likely a common sight in the wintry landscape of the region. The boys and men appear to be in deep conversation, perhaps sharing stories or planning their next move. The image captures the meeting of frontiers between the native culture and the encroaching modern world. Lanin's photograph is a valuable contribution to the ethnographic and anthropological record of this period, providing insight into the daily lives and traditions of the people of the Far East during the late 19th century. The photograph is part of a collection of 154 images taken by Lanin and presented to the Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg by merchant V.P. Myl'nikov upon his return from the Amur region. Today, this photograph is housed in the National Library of Russia and the Library of Congress, serving as an important reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Russia's Far East.
