Ural Cossack (in the steppes), 1862. Creator: Karpov

Ural Cossack (in the steppes), 1862. Sheet 8 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Ural Cossack (in the steppes), 1862" is a remarkable piece of historical documentation. Created by Karpov, it is part of the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia), which was published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to commemorate the millennium of the Russian Empire. The album consists of two volumes, with Volume 1 containing 62 vividly colored illustrations showcasing various ethnic groups from across the empire dressed in their traditional attire. Additionally, this volume includes a fold-out table providing valuable information on population sizes and distribution among different cities within the empire. A beautifully crafted ethnographic map further enhances our understanding by visually representing which ethnic groups inhabited specific regions. Volume 2 delves into comprehensive essays written in French about these diverse ethnic communities. Authored by Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia, these essays offer detailed insights into each group's history, culture, language, and more – reflecting the knowledge available during that era. The featured image captures an Ural Cossack amidst vast steppes – an evocative representation that transports us back to this significant period in Russian history. The Ural Cossacks were known for their bravery and skills as horsemen and played a crucial role in protecting Russia's borders. As we admire this print today, let us appreciate its significance as a testament to cultural diversity within one of history's most expansive empires. It serves as both an artistic masterpiece and an invaluable resource for scholars interested in exploring Russia's rich tapestry of traditions and customs throughout time.
