EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the U.S.S. Maine wedging up before its launch at the Detroit Dry Dock Company in Detroit, Michigan, in 1889. The U.S.S. Maine was an armored cruiser, a symbol of American naval power and preparedness during the late 19th century. The dry plate negative glass, 8 x 10 inches in size, was taken by an unknown photographer and later acquired by the Library of Congress. The image depicts a large crowd gathered on the wharf, eagerly watching the ship being maneuvered into position for launch. Sailors and workers can be seen on the ship, making final preparations before the big moment. The U.S.S. Maine, with its imposing hull and impressive size, dominates the scene. The black and white image, with its high contrast and sharp details, transports us back in time to this significant moment in American maritime history. The U.S.S. Maine was commissioned in 1895 and saw action during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The ship's tragic sinking in Havana Harbor in February 1898, resulting in the loss of 260 lives, was a major catalyst for the United States entering the war. This photograph, taken years before the tragic event, serves as a reminder of the ship's importance in American naval history and the excitement surrounding its construction and launch.
