Part of the Victoria Tower - the Hoisting-Scaffold, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Part of the Victoria Tower - the Hoisting-Scaffold, 1850....there are few mechanical contrivances employed in the various works at the New Palace, Westminster, of more interest than the novel and admirable scaffold used in the erection of that enormous and magnificent pile, the Victoria Tower. The singular appearance of the scaffold, viewed from all parts - seemingly nothing more than three huge cranes, and the perfectly easy manner in which they appear to work, are extremely striking and interesting, in addition to the circumstance that the exterior of the building is not disfigured during its progress by a forest of scaffold-poles, stretching their gaunt limbs in every direction...we trust the brief notice we have given will enable our readers to appreciate one of those wonderful mechanical means of saving labour which so eminently distinguish the era of modern engineering...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a part of the Victoria Tower under construction in 1850, with the hoisting-scaffold taking center stage. The Victoria Tower, a magnificent addition to the New Palace of Westminster, was an engineering marvel of its time, and the hoisting-scaffold was no exception. Its unique design, resembling three massive cranes, was a sight to behold and a testament to the ingenuity of the Victorian era. The scaffold's novelty and admirable qualities were not limited to its appearance alone. It allowed for the smooth and efficient hoisting of materials to the upper levels of the tower without the need for an extensive forest of scaffold poles that would have disfigured the exterior. The ease with which these cranes operated was a marvel, making the labor-intensive construction process seem almost effortless. The Illustrated London News, in its edition from 1850, described the hoisting-scaffold as one of the 'wonderful mechanical means of saving labor' that characterized the modern engineering era. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse of the innovative methods employed during the construction of one of the most iconic structures in British history. The Victoria Tower, now known as the Clock Tower, stands proudly on the banks of the Thames, its intricate Gothic Revival architecture a testament to the vision and ingenuity of its creators. This photograph, taken during its construction, serves as a reminder of the engineering feats that shaped the Victorian era and continue to inspire us today.
