EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century view of the harbour in Malta, captured anonymously between the years 1742 and 1801, showcases a bustling seaport teeming with activity. The Mediterranean Sea serves as a backdrop to the scene, with ships and boats of various sizes and shapes sailing on the water. In the foreground, groups of men and women are engaged in loading and unloading goods from the waterfront. The hustle and bustle of the scene is reminiscent of the thriving trade and transportation networks that connected the Mediterranean world during this period. The low country landscape is dotted with figures, some of whom appear to be soldiers, possibly indicating the strategic importance of Malta as a military outpost. The view is believed to have been created by the German artist Georg Balthasar Probst, although his signature is absent from the work. The etching or watercolour, now housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the Maltese Islands were a vital link in the maritime trade routes of Europe. The scene is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Mediterranean region, with its diverse population and thriving commerce. The boats, from rowboats to sailing boats, add to the visual appeal of the image, while the figures on the waterfront offer a glimpse into the daily life of the people who lived and worked in this vibrant seaport.
