View Taken in the Interior of the Lower Caroline Islands, 19th century. Creators: Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Godefroy Engelmann, Louis-Pierre-Alphonse Bichebois

View Taken in the Interior of the Lower Caroline Islands, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
View Taken in the Interior of the Lower Caroline Islands" is a captivating black and white lithograph created by the collaborative efforts of Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Godefroy Engelmann, and Louis-Pierre-Alphonse Bichebois in the 19th century. This stunning work of art is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, the expedition began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was part of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century. The present lithograph showcases the dense, verdant landscape of the Lower Caroline Islands in the Pacific Ocean, now part of Micronesia. The image captures the meeting of frontiers as the forest gives way to the open sea, with palm trees lining the shoreline. The viewer is transported to a remote and exotic location, where the dense foliage creates a sense of discovery and the palms evoke a sense of tropical paradise. The collaborative efforts of Kittlitz, Engelmann, and Bichebois resulted in a work of art that showcases the natural beauty of the Caroline Islands, providing a glimpse into the natural history of this part of the world. The lithograph is a testament to the rich heritage of art and scientific exploration and remains an important historical document. This beautiful work of art is now part of the collections of the Library of Congress, a national treasure that continues to inspire and inform scholars, artists, and the general public about the natural wonders of the world and the history of exploration.
