The War in Denmark: inside Kolding Gate, Fredericia - Danish soldiers marching out to meet the Austrians, 1864. 'The monument inside the Kolding Gate, which is seen in our Engraving, is an interesting record of the Schleswig-Holstein war of fifteen years ago. It is a fine bronze statue of the representative Danish infantry soldier, "Den Tappre Land-Soldat," whose valour is justly extolled in the well-known National Song of Denmark. On the pedestal of this statue is inscribed the date "July 6, 1849." On that occasion the Germans, being allowed to take up the ground west, north, and east of the city, beset it very closely, and might have forced it to surrender ; "but then it was that the Danes, gathering courage from despair, ventured on that glorious sally which not only baffled the besiegers, but inflicted upon them the memorable defeat which had so great an influence on the final issue of the war".' From "Illustrated London News", 1864

**Marching into History: Danish Soldiers Face Off Against Austrians in Fredericia, Denmark (1864)**
In this powerful photograph print, a column of Danish soldiers marches out to confront the Austrian forces that have invaded their homeland. The scene is set against the backdrop of the historic Kolding Gate in Fredericia, Denmark - a city that would soon become a key battleground in the Schleswig-Holstein War.
As seen on July 6, 1849, when German forces besieged this very gate, Danish troops launched a daring counterattack that not only repelled their foes but also dealt them a decisive blow. This monument inside Kolding Gate commemorates that pivotal moment and honors "Den Tappre Land-Soldat" - the brave representative of Denmark's infantry.
The photograph captures the resolve and determination etched on the faces of these Danish soldiers as they prepare to face off against their enemies. The image is a poignant reminder of the bravery, sacrifice, and resilience displayed by those who fought for their country during this tumultuous period in history.
