Watts First Experiment, 18th century, (c1870). Artist: Herbert Bourne

Watts First Experiment, 18th century, (c1870). James Watt (1736-1819) Scottish engineer, as a boy experimenting with the tea-kettle at the dining table of his childhood home at Greenock. In the left background is his fathers assistant with a client in the carpenters shop. Watt made great improvements to the steam engine introducing, among other things, a separate condenser and the centrifugal or flyball governor. He formed a highly successful partnership with the Birmingham entrepreneur Matthew Boulton, manufacturing steam engines to power mills, mines and factories. The Standard (SI) unit of power, the Watt, is named for him. After the picture by Marcus Stone (1840-1921)

EDITORS COMMENTS
Watts First Experiment, 18th century, (c1870). This print by Herbert Bourne captures a significant moment in the life of James Watt, the renowned Scottish engineer. Depicted as a young boy, Watt is seen conducting his first experiment with a tea-kettle at the dining table of his childhood home in Greenock. The image showcases Watt's early curiosity and passion for innovation. In the background, we catch a glimpse of Watt's father's assistant attending to a client in their carpenter shop. This setting symbolizes the supportive environment that nurtured Watt's engineering talents from an early age. Watt went on to revolutionize steam power by introducing groundbreaking improvements such as separate condensers and centrifugal governors. His partnership with Birmingham entrepreneur Matthew Boulton led to the manufacturing of steam engines that powered mills, mines, and factories during the Industrial Revolution. It is worth noting that our modern unit of power measurement, the watt, is named after this brilliant engineer. Through this photograph based on Marcus Stone's original painting, we are transported back to witness one of history's most influential pioneers in action. This remarkable piece not only celebrates James Watt but also pays tribute to his fellow collaborators: Matthew Boulton and artist Herbert Bourne who beautifully captured this defining moment in British engineering history.
