Weather in the Baltic - Bows of H.M. Corvette "Cruiser", 1854. Royal Navy warship during the Crimean War. On the approaching arrival of the fleet from the Baltic, it may be interesting to your readers to see an illustration of the kind of weather the twelve ships constituting the detached squadron had to contend with whilst blockading the Gulf of Finland...The whole ship's sides were one sheet of ice from bow to stern, with the exception of about six or eight feet from the water-line, where the wash of the sea prevented it from forming. From the constant sprays, the anchors and projecting parts assumed shapeless masses; solid ice encircled the ropes to three or four times in extent of their original size, so that, before performing any evolution, they were, of necessity, beaten with hammers, to break off the ice, before they could be rendered through the blocks'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled "Weather in the Baltic - Bows of H.M. Corvette 'Cruiser,'" dates back to 1854, and its creator remains unknown. The image offers a glimpse into the harsh conditions endured by the Royal Navy during the Crimean War, specifically by the twelve-ship squadron blockading the Gulf of Finland. The photograph portrays the bows of a corvette, a type of small warship, battling against the unforgiving weather of the Baltic Sea. The entire ship's sides are encased in ice, from bow to stern, with the exception of a few feet near the waterline. The relentless waves of the sea prevented the ice from forming in this area, creating an intriguing contrast against the frozen hull. The anchors and projecting parts of the ship are indistinguishable, having been transformed into shapeless masses by the solid ice that had encircled them. To execute any maneuvers, the ropes had to be beaten with hammers to break off the ice before they could be passed through the blocks. This photograph, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854, offers a poignant reminder of the challenging conditions faced by the sailors during this historical period. It is a testament to their resilience and determination, as they braved the elements to protect their nation's interests.
