Wilbur Wright and his sister, Katherine, 1909
Wilbur Wright, American aviator and his sister, Katherine, 1909. Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) and his brother Orville (1871-1948), were American inventors of aircraft. They originally designed and built bicycles but changed their interest to flying, producing a controllable glider by 1902, and a year later the first aircraft, Flyer I. This was piloted by Orville on 17th December 1903 in the first powered and controlled aircraft flight. The Flyer III, built in 1905, was the first efficient plane and, by 1909, the American army had ordered a military version. On 15 February 1909 Katherine (1874-1929) became the first woman to fly in an aeroplane at Pau, in the South of France

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the dynamic duo of aviation pioneers, Wilbur Wright and his sister Katherine, in 1909. Hailing from America, these remarkable siblings were not only inventors but also trailblazers in the field of aeronautics. Originally renowned for their bicycle designs, they shifted their focus to flying machines and made history with their groundbreaking achievements. In 1902, they crafted a controllable glider which paved the way for Flyer I - the world's first aircraft - taking flight on December 17th, 1903. Orville had the honor of piloting this revolutionary creation. The brothers' ingenuity didn't stop there; by 1905, they unveiled Flyer III - an efficient plane that caught the attention of even the American army who promptly ordered a military version. However, it was Katherine who etched her name into aviation history as she became the first woman to soar through the skies in an aeroplane on February 15th, 1909 at Pau in southern France. This milestone moment exemplified her courage and determination to break barriers. The photograph captures Wilbur and Katherine exuding confidence while donning stylish attire befitting early twentieth-century fashion. Their presence behind those controls symbolizes not just technological advancement but also represents a testament to human ambition and innovation. Preserved within Heritage Images' Historica Graphica Collection, this image serves as a reminder of how two individuals transformed transportation forever through their unwavering dedication to science and pioneering spirit.
