Winter Quarters at Cape Evans, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Winter Quarters at Cape Evans, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Winter Quarters at Cape Evans, c1910–1913" by Herbert Ponting, offers a glimpse into the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Scott embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse team of scientists and experts in various fields. Their mission was twofold: to conduct scientific research and to be the first to reach the South Pole. The photograph showcases their winter quarters at Cape Evans, where they established their base camp amidst the harsh Antarctic landscape. The scene is both awe-inspiring and hauntingly beautiful, as snow-covered mountains loom in the background while sturdy wooden structures stand resilient against nature's forces. Little did they know that their journey would be fraught with challenges and heartbreak. Despite reaching the South Pole on January 17th, 1912, they were devastated to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Trapped by blizzards and running out of supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished in late March. This poignant image serves as a reminder of their bravery and determination in pursuit of scientific knowledge and exploration. It stands as a testament to human resilience in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments. Preserved through time, this print allows us to reflect upon the sacrifices made by these courageous men who ventured into uncharted territories for the sake of discovery.
