Winter Work (Left to right - Debenham, Cherry-Garrard, Bowers, Evans, Taylor), c1911, (1913). Geologist Frank Debenham, zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, Petty Officer Edgar Evans and geologist T Griffith Taylor. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brave members of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition to the Antarctic. Titled "Winter Work" it showcases a group of determined explorers standing side by side in their rugged gear. From left to right, we see geologist Frank Debenham, zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, Petty Officer Edgar Evans, and geologist T Griffith Taylor. Undertaken between 1910 and 1913, the Terra Nova Expedition aimed to continue scientific research while also striving to be the first team to reach the South Pole. Led by Scott himself, this diverse group included experts in various fields such as photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring treacherous conditions and setbacks caused by blizzards and dwindling supplies along their journey towards the South Pole; Scott and four others reached their goal only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically delayed by harsh weather on their return journey and running out of provisions at critical moments; Scott's team perished at the end of March. Their bodies were discovered eight months later alongside poignant diaries detailing their heroic struggle for survival. This remarkable photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition" collection published in Volume I (Smith Elder & Co. , London) in 1913 - an enduring testament to these courageous men who ventured into one of Earth's most unforgiving landscapes in pursuit of knowledge and exploration.
