Women Working in a Field, 1867. Creator: Winslow Homer (American, 1836-1910)

Women Working in a Field, 1867. In December 1866, Winslow Homer sailed from Boston for a year of study in France. Since the early 1850s he had known the principles of French painting, particularly the outdoor style of the Barbizon School. Many of his artist friends were interested in this modern French school-among them William Morris Hunt (1824-1879), who owned an extensive collection of Barbizon paintings, including ten works by Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875). This painting shows Millets influence in both subject matter and technique, especially the bold brushwork and simplified forms painted with flat, unshaded patches of colour. While in France, Homer spent most of his time working in Paris and the rural village of Cernay-la-Ville in Picardy, about 40 miles from the French capital. This oil sketch was probably painted there

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Women Working in a Field, 1867" by Winslow Homer takes us back to the late 19th century. In December 1866, Homer embarked on a journey to France for a year of artistic exploration and study. Having been familiar with French painting principles since the early 1850s, particularly influenced by the outdoor style of the Barbizon School, he sought inspiration from this modern French school. Homer's close friend William Morris Hunt owned an impressive collection of Barbizon paintings, including works by Jean-Francois Millet. It is evident that Millet's influence can be seen in both subject matter and technique within this painting. The bold brushwork and simplified forms painted with flat patches of color showcase Homer's mastery in capturing the essence of his subjects. During his time in France, Homer divided his efforts between Paris and Cernay-la-Ville, a rural village located about 40 miles away from the bustling capital city. This oil sketch was most likely created during his stay there. The photograph presented here is part of Heritage Art/Heritage Images' collection showcasing America's rich heritage through art. It serves as a testament to Winslow Homer's talent as an American artist who drew inspiration from European styles while maintaining his unique vision.
