EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in history - the suspension of construction on Cunarder 534, later known as the iconic RMS Queen Mary. Taken in December 1931 amidst the bleak economic conditions of the Great Depression, it portrays workers leaving the shipyards in Clydebank, Scotland. The image showcases a bustling avenue filled with men and women making their way home after another day of toil. The entrance gates stand tall behind them, symbolizing both opportunity and disappointment. Each individual carries their own story of struggle and resilience during this challenging period. The composition exudes a sense of unity among these factory workers, regardless of gender or social class. Men dressed in suits walk alongside ladies donning hats and coats, all bound by their shared occupation within the shipping industry. Their determination is palpable as they navigate through this uncertain time. Despite its temporary halt due to economic hardships, Cunarder 534 would eventually be launched three years later as RMS Queen Mary - an emblematic ocean liner that would go on to shape maritime history. This photograph serves as a reminder not only of the struggles faced by those employed in shipbuilding but also highlights their contribution to Britain's industrial heritage. Preserved within "The Silver Jubilee Book" this snapshot from Odhams Press Ltd transports us back to an era defined by perseverance and collective strength amidst adversity.
