EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the reality of a young mother's life during the Great Depression in 1939. Taken by renowned photographer Dorothea Lange, the image depicts a twenty-two-year-old woman with her three-year-old daughter in a mobile unit at an FSA camp in Merrill, Klamath County, Oregon. The caption reveals that this resilient mother has experienced displacement and economic hardships as she and her husband have worked various agricultural jobs across Oregon to make ends meet. They have labored in strawberry fields, cherry orchards, bean farms, and hop yards before ending up at a potato pickers camp. Despite their hard work and willingness to help others along the way, they find themselves penniless and even lost their car due to financial struggles. The young mother expresses how every cent they earn is spent on basic necessities like food while constantly moving from place to place. This photograph not only documents the harsh living conditions faced by many families during this era but also serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination exhibited by individuals striving for survival amidst challenging circumstances. It stands as a testament to Dorothea Lange's ability to capture raw human emotions through her lens and shed light on important social issues of her time.
