EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Cinema lobby BL26831 at Finsbury Park Cinema in Greater London. The image showcases the entrance lobby, adorned with intricate architectural details, and a sweeping staircase that exudes elegance. Originally known as Pykes Cinematograph when it opened its doors in 1909, this building at 269 Seven Sisters Road has a rich history. Behind it stood the much larger Rink Cinema on Stroud Green Road. In 1920, these two cinemas merged under the name Finsbury Park Cinema (later reverting back to Rink Cinema), with Pykes cinema transforming into a magnificent foyer while the auditorium remained in the original Rink building. The photograph, taken by Adolphe Augustus Boucher during the 1920s, offers us a glimpse into an era where going to the movies was an enchanting experience. It transports us back to a time when ornate architecture and attention to detail were paramount in creating memorable cinematic spaces. As we gaze upon this image, we can almost imagine ourselves stepping through those doors and being transported into another world of storytelling and imagination. The print serves as both a testament to our cultural heritage and a reminder of how cinema has evolved over time.
