EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the construction of Reactor No. 1 at Berkeley Nuclear Power Station. Located in Gloucestershire, this power station was not only the first commercial nuclear power station in the United Kingdom but also one of the pioneering nuclear reactors in Britain. The image offers a unique perspective, looking east over Reactor No. 1 during its construction phase. The sheer magnitude and complexity of the project are evident as workers diligently carry out their tasks amidst a backdrop of cranes, scaffolding, and machinery. Laing, renowned civil engineers, took charge of this monumental undertaking on January 7th, 1957. Their expertise and meticulous planning ensured that Berkeley Nuclear Power Station would become operational by 1962. Situated near the mouth of River Severn and Bristol Channel along with three other stations, Berkeley played a crucial role in meeting Britain's growing energy demands during that era. However, time has taken its toll on this once-thriving facility. After serving faithfully for several decades, Berkeley Nuclear Power Station ceased operations in 1989 and has since been decommissioned. Thanks to A© Historic England Archive for preserving this remarkable piece of history through their print collection. It serves as a reminder not only of our technological advancements but also highlights the importance of responsible energy production for future generations to come.
