The Southern Region division of Laing undertook the construction of Phase 2A at St Georges Hospital on behalf of the South West Thames Regional Health Authority between June 1984 and November 1988. The St James Wing was named in honour of the St James Hospital in Balham which had become part of the St Georges Group in 1980 and closed in 1988 with the opening of the extension at the Tooting site. It was demolished in 1992

This print captures the St James Wing at St Georges Hospital, Tooting, during its construction phase in the 1980s. The image showcases the hospital building under development, with a focus on the western corner of the structure as seen from an eastern perspective. Constructed by Laing's Southern Region division between June 1984 and November 1988, Phase 2A of St Georges Hospital was commissioned by the South West Thames Regional Health Authority. This expansion project aimed to meet the growing healthcare needs of Greater London. The St James Wing holds significant historical significance as it was named after Balham's St James Hospital, which merged with St Georges Group in 1980. With its completion in 1988, this new wing marked the closure of St James Hospital and symbolized progress for medical care in Wandsworth. Sadly, despite its short-lived existence, having been demolished in 1992; this photograph serves as a testament to both architectural achievement and advancements within healthcare during that era. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this image not only documents an important moment in time but also highlights how hospitals play a vital role in our society by providing essential health services to communities throughout history.
