M6 Motorway construction JLP01_08_081804

EDEN, CUMBRIA. A view of the construction of the M6 Motorway through the Lune Gorge, showing dump trucks on the haul road leading from the Lawtland House viaduct and Roger Howe bridge.
The work on the Lune Gorge section of the M6 Motorway between Killington and Tebay (Junction 37 - Junction 38) was carried out by John Laing Construction Ltd. Work started in October 1967 and the motorway was opened to traffic in October 1970. On this stretch of the M6, 20 bridges and 17 culverts were built across rivers and streams. The Lawtland House viaduct (NY) was built to carry the A685 over the M6 and the Roger Howe bridge (NY) carried the same road over the River Lune. This photograph was published in September 1969 in Laings monthly newsletter Team Spirit

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the monumental construction of the M6 Motorway through the picturesque Lune Gorge in Eden, Cumbria. The image showcases a bustling scene with dump trucks traversing the haul road that leads from the Lawtland House viaduct to the Roger Howe bridge. The arduous task of building this section of the M6 was entrusted to John Laing Construction Ltd. , who commenced work in October 1967 and completed it three years later, opening it for traffic in October 1970. A remarkable feat of engineering, this stretch required the construction of an impressive 20 bridges and 17 culverts across rivers and streams. Two notable structures featured in this photograph are worth mentioning: firstly, we have the Lawtland House viaduct (NY6116502666), which was specifically designed to carry the A685 overtop of the M6. Secondly, there is also a glimpse of the Roger Howe bridge (NY6129602758) that gracefully spans over River Lune while accommodating vehicular traffic on its upper level. Published by Laings monthly newsletter Team Spirit in September 1969, this snapshot not only showcases a significant moment in history but also highlights key aspects such as road building, bridge construction, civil engineering marvels, and heavy-duty trucks involved during that era. This historic image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination when faced with colossal infrastructure projects like motorway development.
