This print captures the essence of the historic Pioneer Health Centre in Southwark, Greater London. The image showcases the iconic sign and blue plaque at the entrance of this remarkable building, known for its pioneering approach to healthcare. Designed by Sir Owen Williams and opened in 1935, the centre was founded by Dr George Scott Williamson and Dr Innes Pearse with a focus on prevention rather than cure. It served as a clinic, recreation centre, and symbol of health and welfare for the local community. Throughout its existence, this Grade II* listed building underwent various transformations. In later years, it was repurposed as a college before being converted into private flats in the late 20th century. Despite these changes, its historical significance remains intact. The photograph not only highlights the architectural beauty of Frobisher Place but also evokes nostalgia for an era when social health and wellbeing were prioritized. The Peckham Experiment is synonymous with this location - an innovative project that aimed to improve public health through recreational activities.
