Louis Armstrong playing with French trumpeter Maxime Saury
A picture taken in 1970 shows American Louis Armstrong (R), the jazz trumpeter whose melodic inventiveness established the central role of the improvising soloist in jazz, playing with French trumpeter Maxime Saury. Armstrong always said he was born 04 July 1900 in New Orleans although nobody knows the exact date. He was also a popular singer (hit recording include " Mack the Knife", " Hello Dolly!" ) and entertainer in such films as " Pennies from Heaven" (1936), " Cabin in the Sky" (1943), and " High Society" (1956), but he remained primarily a jazz musician, touring the world with his New Orleans-style sextet. Armstrong died 06 July 1971. / AFP PHOTO / STF
