African Jacana Jigsaw Puzzle Collection

The African Jacana (Jacanas Charadriiformes) is a species of wading bird found in sub-Saharan Africa, and is a medium-sized bird, with a length of around 25 cm and weighing up to 100g. The African Jacana has long legs and toes which allow it to walk on floating vegetation in shallow water. Its wings are short, but its tail is long and pointed. The plumage of the African Jacana is mainly black or dark brown with white spots, although some males have reddish feathers on their heads and necks. They feed mainly on insects, larvae, small fish, frogs and other aquatic invertebrates which they find by probing the mud with their long toes. They also eat seeds from aquatic plants such as water lilies. The African Jacana nests in shallow pools or marshes where it builds its nest from floating vegetation held together by its feet or beak. It lays between three to five eggs at a time which are incubated for about three weeks before hatching into chicks that can fly within two weeks after hatching.
