13132550. Orbicular batfish, Platax orbicularis, by sunset

Orbicular batfish, Platax orbicularis, by sunset. Juvenile fish use to protect themselves from predators on the mangrove drifting motionless with the current becoming easily mistaken for dead leaves. They often drift close to dead leaves what increases the similarity. They live in shallow protected coastal waters to deep, somewhat silty habitats. Adults are found singly or in small groups and occasionally in large schools. Juveniles occur singly or in small groups among mangroves and inner sheltered lagoons while adults move out to open waters over sandy areas of deep lagoons, channels, and seaward reefs to a depth of at least 30 m. Leaf or Fish? The Ultimate Game of Hide and Seek in the Mangroves!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this stunning print captured by Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness the incredible camouflage skills of the Orbicular batfish. As the sun sets over Zanzibar's coastal waters, these juvenile fish cleverly protect themselves from predators by drifting motionless with the current, easily mistaken for dead leaves. With their vibrant colors and leaf-like appearance, it's no wonder these little swimmers often find themselves floating close to actual dead leaves, further enhancing their disguise. From shallow mangroves to deep silty habitats, they adapt effortlessly to different environments. While adults prefer solitary or small group living arrangements near sandy areas of lagoons and reefs, juveniles seek refuge among mangroves and inner sheltered lagoons. Their behavior is nothing short of fascinating! As we gaze at this vertical underwater snapshot filled with tropical wonders, it becomes clear that nature has its own tricks up its sleeve. These baby batfish not only mimic lifeless leaves but also exhibit a colorful display that captivates our imagination. So next time you stroll along a beach or explore an oceanic paradise like Zanzibar's shores, keep your eyes peeled for these masterful mimics - blending seamlessly into their surroundings while adding a touch of whimsy to marine life!
