She was a genius for math from an early age and met Charles Babbage in 1833. She became interested in a model he had constructed of a mechanical device to compute values of quadratic functions, the Difference Engine. Ada translated an article by an Italian engineer Manabrea on Babbageas Analytical Engine and added notes of her own which showed how the Analytical Engine would work including a set of instructions for using the Engine to calculate Bernoulli numbers. In 1835 Ada married William King, later the first Earl of Lovelace); British, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable portrait of Augusta Ada Byron, engraved by W. H. Mote in the mid-19th century. The image captures the essence of a brilliant mind and a woman ahead of her time. Augusta Ada Byron, famously known as Ada Lovelace, was not only the daughter of renowned poet George Gordon, Lord Byron but also an exceptional mathematician. From a young age, she displayed an extraordinary aptitude for numbers and logic that set her apart from her peers. In 1833, Ada had a fateful encounter with Charles Babbage, where she became enamored with his groundbreaking invention - the Difference Engine. Her passion for this mechanical device led her to translate an article on Babbage's Analytical Engine written by Italian engineer Manabrea. However, Ada did not stop there; she added extensive notes of her own that showcased how this revolutionary machine could function. Ada's contributions went beyond mere translation; she provided detailed instructions on using the Analytical Engine to calculate complex mathematical problems like Bernoulli numbers. These notes solidified her place in history as one of the world's first computer programmers. Despite societal expectations placed upon women during that era, Ada defied conventions and pursued intellectual pursuits passionately. This print serves as a testament to her brilliance and determination while highlighting her role as both daughter to Lord Byron and later Countess of Lovelace after marrying William King. The image encapsulates not just a moment frozen in time but also
