EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Blue Gros-beak from Angola, 1749-73" showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular print has been re-engraved by Seligmann, who combined it with Catesby's work on Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. The image depicts a stunning Blue Gros-beak perched delicately on a branch. Its vibrant blue plumage stands out against the lush green foliage in the background. The intricate details of each feather are masterfully captured through the skilful technique of engraving. Seligmann's contribution to this piece is evident as he translated names into German and added additional figures and plants not present in the original works. This collaboration between two talented artists brings together their unique perspectives and expertise in natural history illustration. As we admire this print, we are transported back to an era when exploration and discovery were at their peak. It serves as a testament to mankind's fascination with nature's wonders and our desire to document them for future generations. This remarkable artwork is part of a private collection but has been made available for public appreciation through ePurix Verlag Volker Christen. Its inclusion in Fine Art Finder allows us to marvel at its beauty while appreciating its historical significance within the realms of ornithology and artistic expression.
