EDITORS COMMENTS
The lithographic print titled "European Residents in China, Paper-Chasing at Shanghai is locally much resented" captures a vivid scene from 19th-century China. Created by Frank Dadd and now housed in a private collection, this illustration originally appeared in The Graphic on October 20,1894. In the image, we witness an unfortunate plight faced by European residents as they engage in paper-chasing activities near Shanghai. As they wait for passage across a bridge, their hands filled with papers and documents, hostility emanates from the locals. A truculent peasant bars their way while playful natives taunt them with ponies. A novice horse rider attempts to jump over a ditch but falls into it instead. To add insult to injury, his mount bolts away upon seeing a village boy holding a pail of sewage. Meanwhile, other Europeans struggle to navigate the treacherous terrain on horses or ponies. This engraving highlights the cultural clash between European residents and Chinese locals during that era. It portrays both the challenges faced by foreigners trying to adapt to unfamiliar customs and landscapes and the resentment felt by indigenous communities towards these intruders. Through its detailed depiction of bridges - wooden, stone, suspension - this artwork also showcases various architectural styles prevalent in Asia at that time. Overall, this print offers viewers an intriguing glimpse into historical interactions between different cultures within China's vibrant landscape.
