AJ Finberg was a passionate art enthusiast and collector from Launceston. In 1909, he had the incredible opportunity to witness the masterpieces of renowned artist JMW Turner. From Scarborough to Venice, Finberg immersed himself in Turner's breathtaking works, capturing their essence through his keen eye for detail. One such masterpiece that left him awe-inspired was "Lausanne. " The painting depicted the city's picturesque landscape with its rolling hills and charming architecture. Finberg marveled at how Turner skillfully captured every intricate detail, bringing the scene to life on canvas. Another remarkable piece that caught Finberg's attention was "On the Lake at Petworth - Evening. " As he gazed upon it, he felt transported to a serene lakeside retreat bathed in golden hues. The tranquility exuded by this artwork resonated deeply within him. Amongst Turner's collection, one painting stood out for its grandeur: "Norham Castle. " This majestic fortress perched atop a hill overlooking the River Tweed captivated Finberg with its imposing presence and rich history. He admired how Turner expertly portrayed both strength and vulnerability in his depiction of this iconic landmark. As his journey continued, AJ Finberg encountered more captivating artworks like "Stonehenge: Sunset" and "Lulworth Cove. Finberg also explored lesser-known locations through Turner's eyes. His visit to Tells Chapel in Fluelen revealed an intimate portrayal of a small chapel nestled amidst lush greenery—a hidden gem brought into focus by both artist and collector alike. Bellinzona became another destination etched into Finberg's memory after witnessing two striking pieces: "From the Road to Locarno" and "From the South. " These paintings showcased Bellinzona’s architectural marvels against dramatic backdrops—an ode to the town's rich history and natural splendor.
