The Accident at St. George's Hospital: the Holland Ward after the Accident, 1876. Creator: Unknown
The Accident at St. George's Hospital: the Holland Ward after the Accident, 1876. From a sketch by Mr. F. Dawtrey Drewitt. A broken water tank caused a flood: The great pieces of iron and the water passed through the roof and down through the top of Wright's Ward, and burst through the floor by a still larger hole, bending those rafters of the floor which it did not sweep away at the edges. It then passed through the Holland Ward underneath by a smaller hole...The three women injured...fell with their beds. The shock jammed the door of Wright's Ward, and the nurse could not open it. Some students, headed by Mr.Wilson, the junior house-surgeon, and a missionary clergyman...found another bed slipping off the bent rafters into the hole below, and just succeeded in saving the child, Elizabeth Moore, who was in it, before the bed went over with a crash...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

The Accident at St. George's Hospital - The Holland Ward after the Accident, 1876
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant and evocative image that captures the aftermath of a tragic incident at St. George's Hospital in London. The cause of the accident was a broken water tank that flooded the hospital, specifically the Holland Ward and the ward above it, known as Wright's Ward. The photograph, created from a sketch by F. Dawtrey Drewitt, depicts the devastating scene of the Holland Ward after the accident. The water and debris are visible, having passed through the roof and floors, bending the rafters and causing chaos. Three women, who were injured, are shown lying on their beds, which have been jammed against the wall due to the shock of the incident. The door of Wright's Ward is jammed shut, and the nurse is unable to open it. The photograph also tells a story of heroism and quick thinking. Students, led by the junior house-surgeon, Mr. Wilson, and a missionary clergyman, managed to save a child whose bed was slipping off the bent rafters and was about to fall into the hole below. The child, Elizabeth Moore, was saved just in time, adding a glimmer of hope to an otherwise devastating situation. The accident at St. George's Hospital was a significant event in the history of the hospital and the community. It brought attention to the need for better safety measures and infrastructure to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The image of the Holland Ward after the accident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and the human spirit's ability to rise to the occasion in times of crisis.
