Balliol surrendering his crown to Edward I of England, 1296. Artist: J Rogers
Balliol surrendering his crown to Edward I of England, 1296. In 1292, Edward I was asked to arbitrate in the selection of the King of Scotland in order to prevent a dynastic war breaking out between rival claimants. John Balliol (1250-1314) emerged as the successful candidate. Edward, who had demanded to be recognised as Lord Paramount of Scotland as a condition of his agreeing to arbitrate, proceeded to treat Scotland as a vassal kingdom, humiliating Balliol. Finding the situation intolerable, Balliol raised an army and war broke out in 1296. Edward brutally sacked Berwick and then defeated the Scots at Dunbar, forcing Balliol to abdicate

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history when John Balliol, the King of Scotland, surrenders his crown to Edward I of England in 1296. The artist J Rogers skillfully depicts the tense atmosphere and power dynamics between these two monarchs. The backstory reveals that Edward was asked to mediate the selection of the Scottish king to avoid a destructive dynastic war. However, he used this opportunity to assert his dominance over Scotland by demanding recognition as Lord Paramount. This act of humiliation left Balliol with no choice but to raise an army and declare war against England. In this image, we witness the aftermath of Edward's brutal conquest: Berwick sacked and Scots defeated at Dunbar. With no other option left, Balliol is forced to abdicate his throne under immense pressure from Edward's forces. J Rogers' engraving adds depth and intensity to this historical event. The monochrome tones emphasize the gravity of the situation while highlighting every detail on their faces - Balliol's resignation mixed with defiance, and Edward's satisfaction at achieving his desired outcome. This artwork serves as a reminder of how political ambitions can lead nations into conflict and individuals into surrendering their sovereignty. It immortalizes a crucial chapter in British history that forever altered the relationship between Scotland and England.
