George Alexander MacFarren, composer, 1881. MacFarren (1813-1887) was Principal of the Royal Academy of Music, Professor of Music at Cambridge University and conductor at Covent Garden. Despite failing eyesight, which led to blindness in 1865, Macfarren remained a prolific composer, writing 18 operas, 13 oratorios and cantatas, 9 symphonies, and 162 songs. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
