"Graziella" - painted by R. Lehmann - from the Exhibition of the Royal Academy, 1856. Engraving of a painting. This is one of Lamartine's prettiest word-pictures, exquisitely transferred to canvas by Rudolph Lehmann, of Rome. Lamartine relates in his autobiographical "Confidences" that having, during a youthful freak, been wrecked in a fishing-boat in the Greek isle of Procida, he and his companions were fed, clothed, and sheltered by a fisherman's family. One evening he read to them the story of "Paul and Virginia". From "Illustrated London News", 1856

Graziella,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating painting by Rudolph Lehmann, showcases a moment of literary inspiration brought to life. This masterpiece, displayed at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1856, is an engraving of a scene inspired by the French poet and diplomat, Alphonse de Lamartine. Lamartine, in his autobiographical "Confidences," recounts an incident from his youth when he was stranded in a fishing boat off the Greek isle of Procida. The fisherman's family took him and his companions in, providing them with food, clothing, and shelter. One evening, Lamartine read to them the story of "Paul and Virginia." Lehmann's painting, "Graziella," captures this moment of storytelling, with the poet gesturing to the children gathered around him, engrossed in the tale. The scene is set in a rustic, idyllic countryside, with boys and men of the fisherfolk community listening intently. The poet, with a thoughtful expression, looks up from his book, his hand gesturing to emphasize the story's points. The painting beautifully encapsulates the essence of Lamartine's words, transporting us to a simpler time and place. This engraving, published in the "Illustrated London News," is a testament to the power of literature and the human connection it fosters. It is a poignant reminder of the universality of stories and their ability to transcend time and place, resonating with people across generations.
